Internet hacker sentenced

Filed under: Internet — admin @ 7:02 pm

And he is one lucky bastard in my opinion.

Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, of Hopkins, Minn., will serve his time at a low-security prison and must perform 10 months of community service. He had faced up to 10 years in prison, but the judge took pity on the teen, saying his neglectful parents were to blame for the psychological troubles that led to his actions.

“(The Internet) has created a dark hole, a dungeon if you will, for people who have mental illnesses or people who are lonely,” U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman said. “I didn’t see any parent standing there saying, ‘It’s not a healthy thing to lock yourself in a room and create your own reality.’”

Woe be to this little prick had I been in charge his punishment. He would have gotten far worse than what those at Abu Ghraib received. A little more heavy on the torture than on the beating off, though. This guy probably already does plenty of that. Damn wanker.

Seriously though. The only thing that is going to curb the malicious hackers and spammers is severe deterrance in the way of stiff punishment. And I dont mean that kind of stiff punishment.

WinXP workstation is toast

Filed under: TheGarage — admin @ 10:32 pm

If you can relate, I have lost confidence in the machine I use as my daily workstation. Indeed the very machine used to scratch out this missive. Possibly it’s final contribution to this log. After much effort and many profanities I thought I had the digital malady all sorted out. Made it almost three whole days without a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) when from out of the blue I found myself back in the barrel. Same symptom, but now with a different stop code.

I just can’t take it anymore!

Before, the problem reported to me in stark blue relief was primarily a stop 8e in association with the win32k.sys file. After troubleshooting a very long laundry list of the usual suspects, a complete install of all critical windows updates is what had seemingly cured the problem–for almost three whole days. Now I am thinking that fully installing windows xp service pack 2 might remedy the newest ailment.

In my thoroughly considered opinion, I think the genesis of the whole sorry mess was installing the IE6 sp1 “critical” security update back in mid December. This once stable workstation has been undependable ever since. It is difficult if not impossible to get any serious work done when you sit in constant fear of suddenly losing everything in a incomprehensible flash of blue.

I usually don’t buy in to every little update and patch that a vendor throws out there. I have been around this block before many, many years ago. When a machine is stable, stick with it. Best practice is not to mess with things; change as little as possible. Then along comes the internet, which is a great thing. But, along with the internet came the security threat. Now, even sophisticated users can be thrown in to a paranoid tizzy over the prospect of having the most personal details of their lives thrown open to the world. “Critical” security updates now seem necessary, if not mandatory.

Too bad in my twenty-plus years of experience working with and using personal computers I have found that once operating system patches are applied to a Windows product, instability inevitably follows. Critical security updates seem to be no exception. The mere existence of never-ending software patches indicate to me that I was sold a broken product. Several billionaires and many, many millionaires have been created out of thin air by producing and selling a broken product while the use of said product continues to cost users of the defective product real money in lost productivity. Not to even mention the cost of all the various remedies the “experts” recommend.

Which brings me to why this workstation is toast. While I will still need to correct the problem since this workstation is the most powerful machine in the TheGarage–which is to say it is the most powerful machine in my inventory–it’s current state of existence is history.

This saga is to be continued.

Enemy brigade seen “rolling” with what they got

Filed under: Whimsy — admin @ 9:52 am

This is very interesting:

Most bizarre among the plans was one for the development of an “aphrodisiac” chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers sexually irresistible to each other. Provoking widespread homosexual behaviour among troops would cause a “distasteful but completely non-lethal” blow to morale, the proposal says.

Sounds like the X-Men are developing the X-Bomb.

WinXP: State of the Art?

Filed under: TheGarage — admin @ 6:32 pm

If you guessed I had given up on writing… wrong!

If you guessed that Microsoft sucks, or Windows sucks, or Bill Gates sucks, or that spammers suck, or that the whole state of personal computing sucks… you would be pretty much on target. I have been effectively without a computer for over two weeks now.

I am so sick and tired of Microsoft and their crap products that I am looking in to a large ammonium nitrate purchase…. er, just kidding of course. I know, I know, that’s not even funny to kid around about. (Yeah, right.) So you FBI guys stay the fuck away unless you know how to correct the random BSoD issues that seem to be rampant with Microsoft Windows XP. Check out some of the forums threads relating to STOP crashes and marvel at how much time and money people are having to spend to correct this BS. The one from annoyances.org is a good summary at what it takes to troubleshoot this problem.

HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM! I AM GOING CRAZY! I am having the same set of errors, for a reason I am not aware of. And it’s nothing specific, it just does it in the middle of anything! I updated everyfile about my mainboard, updated BIOS, downloaded latest Intel files NOTHING fixes it! I even formatted the whole hard-disk and installed Xp all over again it keeps doing it. I bought new fans, PC cooler. I cleaned all my hardware. No luck at all. I know one thing for certain though, these problems started when I changed my motherboard to MSI (MS-6528 Intel 845 Chipset). I have Sound Blaster Live! sound card And GeForce Ti4400 display. It also seems to me like everyone who has this problem owns an Nvidia GeForce, I hope it has nothing to do with that. I am even typing this reply as fast as I can because I really don’t know when the system is gonna crash! HEEEEEEEEEELP!!!

Anyway, I doubt that my problems are over. The stability of Microsoft products has never wavered in the twenty years since Windows 3.1 debuted. It was a shitty product then and it is a shitty product now. And let’s not even go in to the security issues. Microsoft simply does not have the ability to make a stable, secure operating system. Period.

The fact that I was able to complete this post is quite astonishing.

WTF!

Filed under: TheGarage — admin @ 6:54 pm

Simply unbelievable:

Duties will include imaging computers, placing computers on the network, and supporting printers. Consultants will use VPN, remote access, desktop to mainframe applications, Microsoft Office, and Lotus Notes. Duties may also include installing, configuring and troubleshooting software/hardware on Dell desktop and laptops running Windows NT in a standardized corporate environment.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in addition to a strong professional image will be critical. Consultants must have a reliable automobile and be willing to travel to various nearby locations - sometimes on short notice (expenses will be reimbursed). Consultants must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds. Pay for this opportunity is $15.00.

I know it is just a desktop support position, but why would anyone who could do all the things required in this position work for $15.

To call this position an opportunity seems a bit misleading.
