I Bought Win xp Pro
I said I never would, but I guess it was inevitable. I have been looking
at moving most of my "stuff" over to Linux but after so many
years of using Windows the learning curve to be as productive in Linux
is a big one. For the last couple of years I have been using Win98 workstations
and WinNT 4.0 SPx for my web server. After upgrading Domino to v6.5, it
seems that I have to finally put ole Win98 to pasture. The notes client
(full client, including development and admin, of course) tends to destroy
Win98 installations. Works great on Win Xp though.
Anyway, I live about 45 minutes south of the big city. Since I needed a
replacement Smart Media card for my digital camera, i thought the trip
would be worth it too save about $100. When I get to the bargain store,
they wont sell me the advertised OEM version of Windows Xp for the advertised
price unless I buy an internal
component "necessary to run Windows." The cheapest thing they
had to offer was a $9 network card. Of course I protested that the advertisement
didn’t say OEM nor did it say must purchase anything else with it. "Hey,
man, I don’t make the rules."
Yeah right.
So, then I ask for a 256 MB Smart Media memory card. "Oh, we sell
more of the other kind so we don’t have any of those."
I asked, why do you advertise them then? "Well, I can order you one."
No thanks.
So, after an hour and a half drive and about 10 bucks in gas, plus the
$10 network card, and no smart media card, I might have saved $5. You would
think I would know better by now.
